- Get Stremio if you don't have it yet. It's a free video app for computers, phones and TVs, from stremio.com.
- Add Polyglot Subs to Stremio, sign in with your email and pick the language you're learning. Your 7-day free trial starts right away, and you don't need a card.
- Press play. The subtitles show up in both languages, already in sync. On Windows 10 or 11, install our app as well for clickable words.
In Stremio, on any device
This part works wherever you use Stremio: on your computer, your phone or your TV. Each line is shown in the language you're learning, with the English line under it. Harder words get a short meaning written underneath, so you can keep watching without looking things up.
For Japanese, you can read with furigana over the kanji, in romaji, or in kana.
You don't have to hunt for subtitle files. Polyglot Subs finds them and syncs them to your video. If the file already has subtitles inside, those are used, and the lines are matched to the voices.
The Windows app
On Windows 10 or 11, the app lays the subtitles over the video as words you can click. When you click one, the video pauses and a card opens with:
- Meaning and grammar
- What the word means in this line, with the grammar explained in plain English.
- Say and Slowly
- Hear the word at normal speed, or slowed down.
- I know this
- Mark words you already know, so your subtitles can skip them.
- Explain with AI
- Copies a question about this word in this sentence for the AI chat you use, or answers instantly if you run Ollama on your PC.
- Save to Anki
- A flashcard with a picture of the scene and the audio of the line.
While you watch
Each word lights up as it's spoken, like karaoke, so you can follow along.
Spanish and German nouns are coloured by gender. Idioms are kept together: tomar el pelo comes up as “to pull someone's leg”, not “to take the hair”. German verbs that split in two are joined back up, so in Ich rufe dich an you'll see anrufen, “to call”.
You can have rare words highlighted, and choose how the English line appears: shown, blurred until you hover over it, or hidden. Press Alt+E to switch. Keeping it blurred is a good way to test yourself: read the line first, then hover to check.
Anki is a free flashcard app. You only need it if you want to save cards.

Japanese, Spanish and German for now, each one always shown with English. In all three, harder words get a short meaning underneath. We'll add more languages later.

Questions
Is it free? What happens after the trial?
The first 7 days are free and you don't need a card. After that it's $3.99 a month or $34.99 a year. If you don't pick a plan, the trial just ends and nothing is charged.
Which devices does it work on?
The learning subtitles work in Stremio on your computer, phone or TV. The clickable words, pronunciation and Anki cards are in our Windows app, which needs Windows 10 or 11.
Do I need anything else installed?
Stremio, which is free. For clickable words you also need our Windows app. Anki is optional and only needed for flashcards.
Does it provide videos?
No. Polyglot Subs doesn't provide any videos. It only adds subtitles and learning tools to what you already watch.
How do I cancel?
Use the link in your receipt email, or write to support@polyglotsubs.com and we'll cancel it for you. You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for.
Is my data private?
Yes. No ads, no tracking cookies, and no history of what you watch. We store your email, your subscription status, your settings and the words you mark as known. To build your lessons, the Windows app sends us subtitle text and speech timings, never video or audio. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
