What is Polyglot Subs?

A language-learning subscription for people who watch shows and movies in Stremio, a free video app. It turns what you already watch into lessons in Japanese, Spanish or German, always shown with English.

There are two parts: learning subtitles that work in Stremio on any device, and a Windows app with clickable words on top of the video.

Which languages can I learn?

Japanese, Spanish and German. Each one is always shown together with English. We plan to add more languages later.

Does it provide videos?

No. Polyglot Subs doesn't provide any videos. It only adds subtitles and learning tools to what you already watch.

Is Polyglot Subs part of Stremio?

No. It's an independent product and isn't affiliated with or endorsed by Stremio.

How do I start?

Add Polyglot Subs to Stremio and sign in with your email. Your 7-day free trial starts right away, and you don't need a card. For clickable words, also download the Windows app. The steps are on the home page.

Which devices does it work on?

The learning subtitles work in Stremio on your computer, phone or TV.

The clickable words, pronunciation, karaoke highlighting and Anki cards are in our Windows app, which needs Windows 10 or 11.

Do I need anything else installed?

You need Stremio, which is free. For clickable words, you also need our Windows app on Windows 10 or 11.

Anki, a free flashcard app, is optional. You only need it if you want to save words as flashcards.

Ollama is optional too. It's a free AI that runs on your own computer, and with it Explain with AI answers right in the popup.

Where do the subtitles come from?

Polyglot Subs finds subtitles and syncs them to your video for you. If your video file already has subtitles inside, those are used, and the lines are matched to the voices.

Do I have to use Anki?

No. Everything else works without it. If you do use Anki, Save to Anki makes a card with a picture of the scene and the audio of the line.

What does “Explain with AI” do?

It copies a ready-made question about the word you clicked, in the exact sentence where you heard it. Paste it into whichever AI chat you already use. That helps when a word has several meanings.

If you've installed Ollama, a free AI that runs on your own computer, the answer appears right in the popup instead. Either way, nothing goes through our servers. Like any AI, it can get things wrong, so it's worth double-checking anything that looks odd.

Can I hide the English line?

Yes. In the Windows app, the English line can be shown, blurred until you hover over it, or hidden. Press Alt+E to switch. Keeping it blurred is a good way to test yourself: read the line first, then hover to check.

Is it free? What happens after the trial?

The first 7 days are free and you don't need a card to start. After that it's $3.99 a month or $34.99 a year, which saves you 27%.

If you don't pick a plan, the trial just ends and nothing is charged.

How do I cancel?

Use the link in your receipt email, or write to support@polyglotsubs.com and we'll cancel it for you.

You keep access until the end of the period you've paid for, and you won't be charged again. There's no cancellation fee.

Can I get a refund?

Yes. Email us within 14 days of your first payment and we'll refund it in full. The Refund Policy has the details.

Will I pay tax on top of the price?

Depending on where you live, sales tax or VAT may be added at checkout. You'll see the final price before you pay.

Is my data private?

Yes. There are no ads and no tracking cookies, we don't keep a history of what you watch, and we don't sell your data. We store your email address, your subscription status, your settings and the words you mark as known.

What does the Windows app send to your servers?

Only text. To build your lessons it sends subtitle text from your own video file, with speech timings that say when people start and stop talking. It can also send the subtitle files your other Stremio addons offer, but only the text of the file, never the addons' links. Anything we keep from this is deleted within 30 days.

It never sends your video or audio. The pictures and audio on your Anki cards are made on your computer and go straight into Anki, and Explain with AI doesn't send anything to us.
